Blue Marlin
Makaira nigricans · Marlin Azul
The heavyweight of the Sea of Cortez — a true bucket-list fish, and strictly seasonal.
Blue marlin show up when the water goes hot and blue, mostly July through October. They are far less common than striped marlin, so we treat every shot as a bonus rather than a promise — but when a blue eats, it changes the whole trip. These fish need range, heavy tackle and a boat that can stay out, which is why we run them on the 32 ft Ocean Master or the 55 ft yacht. Every blue is released.
How we fish it
- Trolling large lures and skirted baits
- Live bait on the drop-offs
- Catch and release standard
Where we find it
Deep blue water off the banks, 20 – 40 miles out
