Roosterfish
Nematistius pectoralis · Papagayo
Catch-and-release only, and the most visual bite in La Paz — you watch the comb slice the surface before it eats.
Roosterfish are a conservation species for us: photographed and released, every time. We hunt them inshore with live mullet or sardine, running the beaches slowly and looking for the comb. Fly and light-tackle anglers should tell us in advance so we bring the right bait and set up the right boat.
How we fish it
- Live bait along the beaches
- Sight-casting poppers
- Fly fishing from the panga
Where we find it
Sand beaches and rocky points close to shore
